Soil House biochar is handcrafted inoculated charcoal—think of biochar as a megacity for beneficial microbes. Its porous structure provides countless tiny homes for microbial life, offering long-term shelter and stability in your soil. This amendment not only supports the community started by Soil House vermicompost, it also aerates the soil, improves water retention, and helps sequester carbon greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
Soil House biochar turns your soil into a strong ecosystem built to last.

Biochar is extremely versatile and beneficial for all plants and soil types. We especially love its ability to aerate soil while providing a safe, long-term structure for beneficial microbes to thrive in.
We recommend using 10–20% biochar in soil mixes. Here’s how to apply it in different situations:
Indoor Plants
-
Use a 2 lb bag of biochar for indoor plants.
-
Mix the biochar with organic potting soil and place it in the bottom 1–2 inches of the container.
-
Fill the remainder of the container with organic potting soil.
Outdoor Vegetable Gardens
-
Apply 5–10 lbs of biochar per garden row or raised bed.
-
Work the biochar into the soil using a broadfork, pitchfork, or rake.
Trees
-
When planting new trees, mix 2 lbs of biochar with 5 lbs of Soil House vermicompost or high-quality compost and place it at the bottom of the tree hole.
-
Fill the rest of the hole with quality compost around the root ball of the tree.
